The One Hundred: 36 Gloves

Gloves are the next item on the list! Gloves add a little something extra to an outfit don’t you think? And perfect for adding a little color and keeping your fingers warm in the cold weathered months.

When one thinks of gloves they are drawn back to the times of the Opera, where women would wear long satin gloves to the shows where Hollywood glamor was just amazing and over the top! During that time there would not be a single photo of actresses without their gloves on! Gloves were a symbol of elegance and femininity! And were the thing of vogue mainstream in the 60s and the 70s but soon as the feminine movement came in women perceived gloves as “shackles” and constricting, with them soon dwindling away. And now if we see a women in a perfectly thought out outfit with gloves it is a wonderful moment because it is just lovely!

*FUN FACT* The First Opera worn gloves was in 1566 by Queen Elizabeth I.

Now time to learn about when going to buy your gloves!

  • It is important that the gloves fit all the way to the fingers
  • (Nina say’s that) wearing them with a three-quarter length jackets for a “safer” opinion
  • if you are nervous of the long satin glove, go for an edgy leather driving glove, or maybe even finger-less…. a different effect then glamorous but Badass tough gal works great during this time period.

“you must have gloves or I won’t go. Gloves are more important than anything else.”        ~ Meg in Little Women

Now lets look at some of the greatest moments for Gloves!

1946 Rita Hayworth in Gilda

1953 Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

1961 Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

1962 Natalie Wood in Gypsy

The One Hundred: 35 Gentlemen’s Hat

The Next item on the list is a Gentlemen’s Hat!

Now I know what most of you are thinking, ummm aren’t those hats for men? Well yes. Hence the name. But that does not mean that you a woMEN cannot wear them! I mean come on I know we all go and still stuff either out of our father’s closet or our boyfriends closet and wear something that was originally intended for men. Also they now make Gentlemen hats just for us. These hats add almost an air of mystery! You attract  attention but at the same time you kind of deflect attention. The can be almost like sunglasses! You make a statement when you walk in the room; there are a few things sexier than a women who throws on a gentlemen’s hat as she runs out the door.

Now here is the tricky part picking the hat that works for you! Truly if you ask me, (though people normally don’t)  you need to go and just try a few on to fully understand what looks good on your head. Because we all have different shaped heads. Now to go off the lovely photos I have added above lets talk about the different hats that you can get! (and which celebs wear them!) The most well-known Gentlemen hat is the Fedora (and you do not have a clue to what that is you most live under a rock) The Fedora, mainly a felt hat creased lengthwise down the crown and pinched at both sides. When one thinks of the Fedora the mob comes into mind because of the air of menace and mystery it gives to the wearer. Therefore, to pull it off pull out all the attitude that you can! Now the celebrities that wore the fedora rang from Frank Sinatra to Madonna. Next is the Trilby, mostly the same as the fedora but the brim is narrow; it has become very popular among jazz and soul musicians. Get your styling tips from Justin Timberlake and Victoria Beckham. Lastly is the Panama, made out of plaited toquille straw with a broad brim and a dented crown. The best part is that it is light, it cannot lose its shape, and it is perfect for traveling! And the actors to look at are Bob Dylan and Clark Gable.

Now here is a little Hat Trick from Nina: Commit to it. If you don’t wear it with confidence, it takes away all the cachet.

Now from the best: “Cock your hat-angles are attitude.” – Frank Sinatra

The One Hundred: 34 Fur

Fur, I was kinda surprised to see this one on the list. I know what you are all thinking, fur, killing animals for their fur those poor little animals.

And that is why I say go either way it is your own preference. But no matter if it is fake or real make sure that it is glamorous and gorgeous. Now here is what you should do if you go for the REAL FUR. Go for sable, chinchilla, or mink. To learn for the best look toward the Italians because they collect fur like we American’s collect our jeans (right Rae). See they get their first fur when they turn eighteen. And a beautiful fur can add to a pair of jeans and an even gown. ANd you then have instant glam factor!!! Now if you go faux…. like me…… Nina says to not try to go for the look alike. Like the Prada’s Fake Classic Fall 2007 line, where they dyed the faux fur giving a life of its own and a clearly faux huge white fur coat is surprisingly chic on its own!

And besides going for a fur coat look at fur stoles, they add a great polished look to your outfit. It is also a great alternative to a coat because lets face it we do not always have the perfect coat to go with that evening look. Then picking out a day coat will not work and it would be silly to go without a coat because it is cold outside. Then picking a fur stole will be a perfect alternative and it doesn’t look like you forgot your coat.

So now you know what to look for when picking out your fur, faux or real, and you will be perfectly ready for the winter cold months!

The One Hundred: 33 Frye Harness Boot

Hmmm…. I think I already did an entire post on these boots? Frye Boots, a very well-known boot that are perfect for all occasions!!

Women started to wear these boots in the 60s to show that they were strong and powerful to the world. High Heels were put in the back burner as women pulled out these chunky, clunky Frye Boots! They were going against the 50s feminine look women had. There are now a pair of these boots in the Smithsonian for this decade. And even though it deals with the 60s women were unable to let go of these boots because of the look of strength and kick ass that these boots portray.

Their History:

These boots may be new to us or new to some of its owners but did you know that this boot company was founded in 1863!? And it is the oldest continuing shoe company in the United States! (wow!!!!!) John A. Frye started the company in 1863 and was the owner for 50 years, until 1911 when he passed away. His family kept up with the business until today!

Frye boots have seen there days! They were worn by the Union soldiers and the Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. (interesting) As well as soldiers in the Spanish-American War including Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many people also wore them on their journeys out to the West in the 1800s. But the hype soon died down until John (the creator of the business’ grandson) was talking to a Navy officer who could not find a Wellington boot that he liked; as a favor John gave him Frye boots. Soon more request came from WWII soldiers and they were soon known as Jet Boots.

Even George Patton (pictured above) wore these Frye Jet Boots. Frye boots traveled the world on the foot of American Soldiers.

In the 1960s a new style ‘Campus’ was made (which is the one that i liked above) Everyone wanted the ‘new’ Frye boot… demanding for the “original fryes”.There are even Frye boots in the Smithsonian Institute to represent clearly the 1960s of America.

As stated on the Frye website, “Today, our classic Harness Boot holds a treasured place in American culture, has been featured in international fashion spreads, and enjoys strong sales in the U.S., Europe and Japan.” The Frye boots are hot again!

“The Frye brand remains true to its heritage and vintage American roots with finely crafted, fashionable boot, shoe, and handbag designs featuring rich leathers and quality hardware.” (Frye website… again. I only get my info from the best!)

Now you know the history that goes with your shoes. Makes them a tad bit more special, right?! And you can know more than just how to wear these boots!

The One Hundred: 32 Fish nets

Fish nets, something I did not expect to be on this list!

But they will soon grow on me, I hope at least. See we all know who use to wear these lovely fish nets. Those flappers in the 20s and girls that smoked in the bars and drank some of those great drinks that have made some people’s Friday nights so much better. And Marlene Dietrich has made them all the rage!

Now here is the way you need to wear these lovely fish nets. The key to wearing them is not under a short skirt with all of them exposed because that does not give anyone imagination and we know what kind of people like to wear those kind of outfits. See you need to let the fish nets have a little flicker like a few inches at the knee, maybe an ankle, or a peep toe! Perfect and it leaves people guessing! So now here is the tips in buying the perfect fish nets. Keep them finer and smaller between an eighth and a quarter-inch. Maybe steer away from black and try it in nude. Pair it with sophisticated clothes like a pencil skirt and a blouse. Now you are ready to wear a great pair of fish nets and not look like one of those flappers from the 20s.
